8 ‘Do Not Ignore’ Warning Signs of Serious Eye Problems

Some eye diseases that lead to partial or total blindness can be avoided or cured if people take the warning signs seriously and consult the eye doctor immediately.

A regular checkup can help detect eye diseases and cure the symptoms before it is too late. Early detection and treatment can prevent conditions like glaucoma and retinal detachment.

Keep reading to know 8 “Do Not Ignore” warning signs of serious eye problems.

  1. Vision changes

Any sudden or significant changes in vision, like blurred, distorted, or double vision, should not be ignored.

Sudden blurry and distorted vision can affect either your peripheral or central vision and can be signs of unhealthy eyes and requires immediate attention from an eye specialist to prevent permanent blindness.

Common eye problems that may cause blurry or distorted vision include refractive errors, corneal infection and retinal diseases, conjunctivitis, cataract, optic nerve, disorders and diabetic retinopathy.

  1. Swelling on or around the eye

Irritation of the eyelids and tissues surrounding the eye can cause the eye to swell. Swelling could result from allergies, fluid retention, or serious eye infections.

Typically, the swelling goes down as the affected area or allergy heals. However, if swelling persists over a long time, it can be a sign of eye diseases that requires an ophthalmologist to see

  1. Headaches

Although headaches are a sign of emotional or physical stress, they can also be a symptom of serious eye conditions.

Constant headaches are not to be overlooked and need in depth investigations. Number of computer users complain of headaches and require special work up.

  1. Red eyes

When your eyes become irritated or inflamed, the blood vessels dilate, causing the white parts of your eyes to appear pink or red. Allergies, smoke, and pollutants in the air around you can cause this and, in some cases, cause long-term eye damage.

Injuries and conditions that can cause extended red eyes are uveitis, blepharitis, conjunctivitis, and glaucoma.

  1. Oversensitivity to light

When the eye is unable to cope with the amount of incoming light, it is known as photophobia or light sensitivity.

Some mild photophobia is normal, as when you walk outside after a movie at the theatre or when first waking up in the morning to sunlight in your room. But extended photophobia may be a sign of something more serious.

Severe or extended photophobia may signal migraine, cataracts, allergies, keratoconus, and corneal abrasion.

  1. Floaters

Floaters are the little lines, dots, specks, and webs that seem to float around in your vision, especially when looking at plain or blank objects.

Occasional floaters in small numbers should not be cause for concern. But if you experience a sudden onset or increased floaters, contact your eye doctor immediately.

Common eye problems that may cause severe floaters are uveitis, torn retina, detached retina, and diabetic retinopathy.

  1. Flashes

If you notice lights that can appear as lightning flashes, flashing bulbs, or bright stars, these can be the first sign of injury or other common eye problems.

Conditions that can cause flashes include migraine, detached retina, torn retina, and post-surgical complications.

  1. Night blindness

The eye is well-equipped to handle low-light situations. The pupil will expand to absorb as much available light as possible, allowing you to see in poorly-lit environments.

But some severe eye conditions limit the eye’s ability to take in this light or to process it, making it difficult to see at night or in dimly lit environments. These include cataracts, glaucoma, and nystagmus.
